*Towneley calculates total portfolio performance net of advisory fees ("net of fees") on the Portfolio Summary report. To arrive at performance net of fees, the advisory fee a client pays during each reporting period is deducted before total portfolio performance is calculated. Performance calculated before advisory fees are deducted from the portfolio, commonly referred to as performance "gross of fees," usually appears slightly higher than net of fees performance. Therefore, performance net of fees may more accurately reflect actual portfolio returns.

Only the Total Portfolio performance numbers appearing in the first line of the portfolio performance section of the Portfolio Summary report (the line highlighted in gray) are calculated net of fees. Sector performance (fixed income, equities, domestic equity, international equity and commodities) is reported gross of fees.  Comparative index performance can only be reported gross of advisory fees, expenses and transaction costs.  Indexes, as distinguished from index funds, are unmanaged groups of securities, thus indexes have no associated fees, expenses or costs, and no "net of fees" calculation is possible. It is not possible to directly invest in an index.
